Bigger Allotment

I'm so excited!

I had a phone call today from the head honcho of our allotments. I have been given the rest of the plot. That more than doubles the size of our allotment. I can't wait for Ed to get home (so I can ask him to help me dig it all).
Looking forwards to spending the evening sketching planting plans and dreaming about all the lovely fruit and veg I can grow next season in our big allotment.

I to chuckle upon reading "I can't wait for Ed to get home (so I can ask him to help me dig it all)." That's cutting right to the heart of it - he's valued because he can dig!
I get the same from my Other Half except that she comes home wanting to see what I've been digging. :)

...and I slave all day digging out and then backfilling and levelling, only to be asked "What have you been doing all day?"

Well done Mel, that's the best news I've heard all day!

I don't know. I haven't measured and I'm not good at estimating by eye. Actually that's not true. I can pour very close to a pint of milk (or a half pint, or whatever) by eye. I can estimate an ounce of butter, four ounces of flour, anything like that. If I ask the grocer for a pound of apples and he gives me too few I know just by holding the bag. And I can look at a length of cotton fabric and see if it's a yard or two yards, or a fat quarter yard to within a thread or two. But when I passed my driving test I dutifully memorised all the stopping distances without having the least clue what 250 yards actually looks like.

I could be wrong, but I think when you're coming up to the exit from a dual carriageway and you get the "counting down" bars (3bars, 2bars, 1bar, exit) they're 100 yards apart. What the hell is a rod anyway?
